Otimização de Fermentação Anaeróbia de Resíduos da Indústria de Bioetanol no Brasil: Geração de Energia e Outros Produtos

The sugarcane industry represents one of the most important activities in the Brazilian agribusiness. Approximately 590 million tons of sugarcane were harvested during the 2012/2013 season, producing 38.2 million tons of sugar and 23.2 billion liters of bioethanol; providing revenues of around USD 36 billion per year to the sector and positioning the country as the first and second largest world producer, respectively, of these commodities.

Biogas technology has the potential to improve both the industry's energy efficiency and environmental friendliness by providing for higher energy output and recycling environmentally hazardous waste such as vinasse. To do that, a major challenge consists of providing stakeholders with a clear understanding of the financial and environmental opportunities biogas technology can offer, convincing them to take the first steps towards adopting the technology.
